Obtain healthy rats from licensed animal traders or the University
Animal Units.

Do not perform dissections outside school laboratories.
|
|
3.

Before starting the dissection:
|
|
|
- Ensure that students have covered any wounds on exposed
parts of their bodies with sterile dressings.
- Ensure that students have worn laboratory gowns, surgical/disposable
gloves and facemasks.
- Rinse dead rats with dilute disinfectant before handling
them over to students for dissection.

|
Rinse the interior parts of the rats with 70% alcohol after
they are cut open.
|
|
5.
|
If it is suspected, during dissection,
that the rat is diseased, stop the dissection and dispose of the
rat in the proper way. |
|
|
|
6.
|
Seek medical treatment promptly in case of accidental injury
during dissection.
|
|
7.
|
After performing dissection:
|
|
|
- Wash hands throughly with liquid soap and water.
- Soak all dissecting instruments and boards in disinfectant.
- Clean all bench surfaces with disinfectant.
- Dispose of the dissected animals quickly and properly. Place
the animal carcasses in double sealed plastic bags, label
the bags, and dispose of them at a designed refuse collection
point.
